Information Page for Einstein's Universe

This website was designed for cable modems or faster connections. It also loads large media files on all pages. The Lecture-Selecter Link below brings you to a page where you select the particular lecture to be viewed. When you load a particular lecture, you will find the content is divided into two frames. The right-hand frame contains the streamed QuickTime *.mp4 video for that lecture. The left-hand frame displays a link to a *.pdf copy of the SmartBoard content associated with that lecture. Open the pdf first, and then start the lecture video.

The site requires at least a 1.4-GHz Pentium P4 or equivalent PC with Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, QuickTime Player 7.0 or higher, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and a cable modem or faster connection. QuickTime Player 7 for PCs is available free from Apple:

and Adobe Acrobat Reader is free from:

Acrobat Reader Download

The site is also available on Mac OSX for both intel and nonintel-based Macs with Safari installed. Other browsers are not supported. QuickTime 7 must also be installed.

Before viewing your first lecture, check the *.mp4 QuickTime plugin. To do this go to the first lecture by Clicking the "Lecture Selecter" Link below. Click on the first lecture, right and left framed windows will appear. To view the QuickTime Preferences: Left Click the black QuickTime window in the right-side frame. Then Right-Click the play arrow in the QuickTime Control bar once. A dialog box will come up. Choose "Plug-in Settings" from this dialog box. After a short delay a "QuickTime Preferences" window will open. Click on the "Streaming" tab and verify that the "Streaming Speed" is "Automatic". Also, under the "Streaming" tab verify that "Enable Instant-On" is checked and set the "Play Streams" slider to "Short Delay". Under the "File Types" tab Click the "+" next to "MPEG-MPEG System..." and view the check boxes. Be sure that the "MPEG4 media" box is checked. Now close the "QuickTime Preferences" window.

To view a lecture, first select the lecture on the "Lecture Selecter Page". Then first Click the link to the SmartBoard pdf file in the left frame. The first page of the SmartBoard lecture notes will appear in the left-side frame with some delay depending on your network connection speed. Now Left-Click the play arrow in the video control bar to start the video in the right-side frame. Again, some delay should be expected, and you may have to Click the play arrow twice to start the stream. In the left-hand frame you may view and follow the content written to the SmartBoard as indicated by the video in the right-hand frame. You can move forward and backward through the SmartBoard lecture notes while the video is playing, and you can use the control bar to pause, advance, or backup the video. Note that only the completed Smartboard frames are shown on the left, but in the video on the right the Smartboard is being filled in during the lecture.
